Bern
The capital city of Switzerland, the city of Bern is famed for its medieval architecture. Read on to discover some of the top things to do in the city:
Visit Switzerland’s tallest cathedral
The tallest cathedral in Switzerland, Bern Minster was erected during the 15th and 16th centuries. Its single spire soars to well above 100 metres and you can even climb the 400 steps to the top where you’ll be met by breathtaking views of the snow-capped Alps. Before conquering the steps, you’ll be met by the Last Judgement as you walk through the cathedral doors. Don’t worry, you won’t quite be meeting your maker but rather you’ll be met by a breathtaking set-piece on the main portal which is heralded as one of the greatest groups of Late Gothic Sculpture in the whole of Europe. Contained in the tympanum you’ll discover how good is separated from evil by the Archangel Michael as well as statues of Jesus, Mary and the Apostles who will be looking down on you from the archivolts. You’ll also get to appreciate the magnificence of the 16th century carved choir stalls as well as the stained glass window known as the ‘Dance of Death’.
Explore the city’s rich past at Bern Historical Museum
Bern is a city with a rich historical past and at Bern Historical Museum you’ll come face to face with a large collection of ethnographical and historical collections dating as far back as the Stone Age. Bern Historical Museum is the second largest institution of its kind, and amongst the most popular highlights include a set of tapestries from Burgundy dating back to the 1400s and 1500s and the enchanting Konigsfelden Diptych composed for the King of Hungary in Venice at the end of the 13th century. If that’s not enough to get stuck into there’s also a built in Einstein Museum which contains tons of photography, footage and objects depicting his time spent in Bern, where he devised his groundbreaking Theory of Relativity.
Come face to face with brown bears at BarenPark
Bears have held great significance for the people of Bern for many years, with the animal being adopted as the national emblem as far back as the 12th century. The city gives you an opportunity to come face to face with these magnificent creatures with a trip to BarenPark. There are two enclosures within the park which are linked by a tunnel and you can even catch a glimpse of the bears bathing in the river. Bern has been keeping its own bears from as far back as the 16th century and they were moved to BernPark in 1857. The park has since been modernised to include a spacious and natural habitat for the animals to explore.
